What triggers the different emotions we experience while watching a film?
Is it the script, the acting, the directing or the setting?
– Or are the associations with our own lives and backgrounds, dreams and fears the real stimulants?
When watching a film, I am aware which emotional reactions I am told (by the combined power of script writers, actors, directors and set designers) to encounter. But quite often these are not the emotions I actually experience and express. Additionally, when specific feelings or moods are tried to be conveyed too strongly I generally feel bored instead of emotionally touched. My psyche being influenced by what I see and what I unconsciously feel also leads to dual emotional episodes – like laughing and crying at the same time. The film versus my life.
In FILM #1 (TEARS VS LAUGHTER VS ANGER VS JOY VS BOREDOM VS COMFORT) I record – minute by minute – which emotions I actually experience at what time of the film. With parallel running graphs I showcase these emotional occurrences and their relation to each other.

The graphs‘ order runs from top (“Tears”) to bottom (“Comfort”).
Each stitching unit represents one film minute, with the highs signaling the occurrences of said emotions.
